I really do hope settlement layouts is kept as small as possible and feel like something from the period, bigger is not always better. Some defense upgrades could be a simple moat or dirt ditch that protects the village with a single bridge to defend it or a small ring wall. It would also be nice if minor settlements were land battles like in Warhammer where the defenses can be upgraded over time maybe at tier 3. There definitely should be some unique settlements like Tintagel Fortress, Jorvik, Bamburgh, and some of the crazy Pict and Irish iron age stone forts like Dún Sebuirge. It might be a challenge to make these style sieges interesting, but to pull this period off I think CA needs to make the settlements similar to what the Viking Conquest team did, just scaled appropriately for unit combat. You would still have ladders and battering rams, but the fortified settlements would act more like unique battle maps with choke points, bridges, causeways, and mazes so the few can hold off many. I really do hope CA does not include artillery, it just doesn't feel right for the period and I hated armies having onagers in field battles in Age of Charlemagne. Looking at some of the settlement possibilities for the period I hope CA takes the historical approach with settlements being smaller and unique to the culture.
